Opioid Reduction

What are opioids?

Opioids are a drug class. The foundation for opioids is made up of ingredients derived from the poppy plant. Those ingredients are powerful painkillers and often help people ingesting them feel relaxed or happy. Large doses of opioids can make you feel “high” and can come with side effects like confusion, slowed breathing, and nausea.

In addition to heroin, the illegal drug, opioids include a number of legal prescription medications. Some of the most commonly prescribed opioids are:

  • Oxycodone
  • Hydrocodone
  • Morphine
  • Codeine
  • Fentanyl

While these medications are effective pain relievers, they’re also highly addictive. Many people who use opioids, even those prescribed by a doctor, experience opioid dependence.

What is an opioid dependence?

You might not recognize the signs of an opioid abuse disorder right away. If you’re taking an opioid, watch carefully for the following symptoms of opioid dependence:

  • Taking more than your prescribed dose
  • Thinking about when you can take another dose
  • Trying to find more opioids than are prescribed by your doctor
  • Fatigue
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Weight loss
  • Withdrawal from social situations and individual relationships

An opioid addiction doesn’t have to shape your life, but you need to get help to overcome it. The problem is that all too many people try to quit cold turkey. Without tools, resources, and support they can use to break their addiction, they often find themselves right back where they started.

At The Rose Center for Integrative Health, you’ll find a team of open, understanding, dedicated doctors. Talk with them about the role opioids are playing in your life so they can work with you to develop a treatment plan to help you take back control.

How is opioid dependence treated?

Addiction varies from person to person. What helps one person break the hold opioids have on them might not work for another person. That’s why The Rose Center for Integrative Health personalizes your treatment program to you.

On top of their dedicated care and support, they also give you access to safe, natural medications that can help. Medical cannabis has been shown as particularly effective in helping people stay comfortable as they work through withdrawal symptoms and remove opioids from their life.
