Alcoholism

What is alcoholism?

Also called alcohol abuse or alcohol use disorder, alcoholism is a serious, widespread condition. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reports that around 6.2% of American adults are living with alcohol use disorder. That’s roughly 1 in 16 people. So if you’re dealing with an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, know that you’re not alone.

The Rose Center for Integrative Health is working to lower that statistic. By providing all of the medical information you need to understand alcoholism and your treatment options, they empower you to make educated decisions about how to move forward.

How do I know if I have alcoholism?

Going solely off appearances, there’s a fine line between regularly enjoying a drink with friends and alcoholism. But you know yourself. Does alcohol have control over your life? If so, The Rose Center for Integrative Health is here to help you change that. Other symptoms of alcohol use disorder include:

  • Feeling like you’re failing at your obligations
  • Regularly craving alcohol
  • Feeling like you’re not in control of how much you drink
  • Minimizing social interactions or hobbies so you can drink

Another way to check if you’re living with alcohol use disorder is to stop drinking for five days. Do you experience any withdrawal symptoms? Those symptoms include:

  • Shaking
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Restlessness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Anxiety

If you experience withdrawal, you don’t feel like you have full control over your drinking, or if you realize that it’s getting in the way of other areas of your life, you might be living with alcohol use disorder. But now you know: Safe, effective treatment is available to help you take back control.

How is alcoholism treated?

The Rose Center for Integrative Health doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all alcoholism treatment program because they know that no two people are alike. Instead, they develop a personalized treatment plan based on what’s right for you.

To start building this plan, they spend time talking with you. They listen as you share your symptoms, your challenges with alcohol, and what you want to change. Then, their board-certified doctors develop a plan that will help you overcome your addiction.

Your plan may include leading-edge alcoholism treatments like ketamine or cannabis, which help disrupt unhealthy behavioral patterns and mitigate withdrawal symptoms.
